Unfortunately, many gardeners, vegetable growers and summer residents who grow garlic often face a big disaster.
Unforeseen things happen during harvesting, which in other cases lead to the fact that you have to throw away almost half of the harvest.
In order to avoid this garden horror and get the expected fruits of the crop you are cultivating, you should not perform certain actions during the process of harvesting garlic.
First. You do not need to water the plants just before harvesting – stop a couple of weeks before it. The same applies to fertilizing.
Second. Do not cut off the leaves immediately after digging – the garlic bulbs continue to receive nutrients from them, ripening normally.
Third. Do not pull out too vigorously, otherwise you will damage the bulbs.
Fourth. Before storing, ensure normal drying conditions. They say it is better to overdry than underdry.
Fifth. Do not harvest prematurely or later than the required time. Otherwise, you will significantly reduce the shelf life of unripe or overripe garlic.
Sixth. Do not dig up when it is damp outside – high humidity is dangerous for garlic. If you collect it in the rain, you can completely lose the harvest.
Seventh. Do not water the roots with a hose in order to clean them from clods of earth. A strong stream can damage the roots.
