How professional gardeners transplant hydrangea: it always takes root

You can transplant hydrangea not only at the beginning of the summer cottage season, but also at its end..

If we talk about the regions of the middle zone, then here, according to the expert of the online publication ‘BelNovosti’, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, it is permissible to carry out this procedure from the end of August to mid-September. In the south, you can transfer hydrangeas to a new place even before October.

How to transplant hydrangea

Of course, you should start with preparing the planting hole. Its size should be at least 3 times larger than the volume of the plant’s root system.

Use equal amounts of high-moor peat and garden soil (the one left after digging) as filling for the hole. You should also mix 60 g of superphosphate and 30 g of potassium sulfate with the soil.

Now pour 10 liters of water inside and after it is absorbed, place the bush in the planting hole so that its root collar is level with the surface of the flower bed. To do this, you may need to add soil to the bottom or, conversely, remove the excess layer.

All the voids around the roots should be filled using the same mixture of peat and garden soil, and at the end you need to water the hydrangea at the root – this will take about 8-10 liters of water.

It remains to mulch the hydrangea with a layer of mulch material 6-8 cm thick – this can be pine needles, ground bark or dry high-moor peat.
