How to choose and store honeysuckle: everything you need to know about berries

The list of berries that used to be grown in gardens is not that long: it includes strawberries, raspberries, cherries, currants and gooseberries.

Today, the range of berries has expanded significantly – blackberries, chokeberries, blueberries and honeysuckle are also grown in different regions.

Let’s talk about the latter: its health benefits, of course, are due to its composition, which includes vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Below, expert of the online publication ‘BelNovosti’, chef Yulia Arkhipova answered other common questions.

How to choose honeysuckle

You can determine the ripeness of the berries by their color. You can pick the fruits when they acquire a uniform blue or purple hue.

Another indicator of ripeness is easy separation from the branch: just touch them slightly, and the berries themselves fall into your hand.

If you buy honeysuckle in a store or at the market, pay attention to the uniformity of the color of the berries. Also check their integrity, as even a few damaged berries will significantly reduce the shelf life.

How to store berries

Fresh berries can be stored in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. It is recommended to transfer them to flat containers and spread them in a thin layer beforehand.

For longer storage, place the honeysuckle in the freezer immediately after picking or purchasing.

Further frozen berries can be used for smoothies, pies and making jam.
