My daughters make the best blueberry dumplings. Their grandma taught them how and now she’s proud of them

Blueberry dumplings are one of the few that I can eat by the ton. I can never get enough of them. In the summer, they taste best with fresh blueberries, although in the winter, they’re also delicious with frozen ones. However, nothing beats those picked straight from the bushes. In dumplings, they keep their shape, don’t fall apart, and when bitten, they’re so juicy that juice flows out of them abundantly.

My mother’s dumplings

That’s why my mother has always made blueberry dumplings all summer long. My daughters became fans of this dinner just like me and whenever they visited grandma, they asked her for these dumplings. And grandma, as you know, will never say no to her granddaughters. But, so as not to make them herself, at first she asked the girls to put the berries on, then they started sticking the dumplings together and started helping with making the dough itself. Grandma measured out the ingredients and the girls kneaded the dough, learning the right consistency. And then the girls took over making the dumplings and made them from preparing the dough to putting the dumplings in the water. Grandma only supervises the whole process. And so the granddaughters took over grandma’s role and it turns out great for them. The dough is perfectly smooth, elastic and thin, and none of the berries leak out during cooking because the dumplings don’t fall apart or tear. The recipe for these dumplings is simple, so write it down and use it in season and out of season. You can stuff any filling into them.

Pierogi with blueberries from grandma’s recipe

To make pierogi with blueberries, you need blueberries, of course. Choose fresh, uncrushed ones, preferably picked the same day. Remember to always wash and dry them thoroughly before putting them into the dough. One of the most important things to make the dough elastic is adding hot water.

Portion for about 15 pierogi.

  • 1 egg.
  • 1/2 cup of hot water.
  • 2 tablespoons of oil (one for the dough, the other for the water).
  • 1. 5-2 cups of wheat flour (how much the dough takes, so that the dough is elastic but not hard).
  • 30 dkg of blueberries.
  • a little sugar.
  • Pour flour onto the pastry board, pour a spoonful of oil into the middle and crack an egg in. Scoop the flour into the middle with a knife, chop it up so that the ingredients combine slightly, and then pour hot water gradually and knead the dough. The dough should be elastic, not too hard, not too soft. If it is too hard, add some hot water, if too soft, add flour. Unfortunately, you have to learn to catch the right moment to knead the dough, but after a few attempts you will get the hang of it.
Kneaded dough roll out very thinly , cut out circles, preferably with a glass and place blueberries on each circle, lightly sprinkle with sugar and seal the sides by pressing with your fingers.
Boil water in a large pot, add a little salt to the water, a spoonful of oil and carefully throw the dumplings into the boiling water. Cook for 9-10 minutes
Fish out with a large slotted spoon and serve immediately with sour cream, yogurt or melted butter.

How to reheat dumplings with blueberries?

It rarely happens that there is anything left for the next day, but if there is something left, it is worth knowing how to store it and then reheat it. Pierogi are best stored in a food container, but it’s a good idea to pour a little butter over them so they don’t stick together when they cool down.
Pierogi with blueberries taste best after heating in boiling, salted water (approx. 3 minutes).
They can also be heated in a microwave. They can also be heated in steam, then we can be sure that they will not fall apart in water.

Can pierogi with blueberries be frozen?

There is nothing to stop you from freezing the pierogi.Place the raw pierogi with blueberries on a tray so that they do not touch each other and put them in the freezer. When they are hard, put them in bags or food containers. You can also freeze the cooked pierogi in the same way.Place them on a tray, wait until they cool down completely and put them in the freezer.Once they are completely frozen, transfer them to bags or containers. Frozen pierogi can be stored maximum 6 months.
