For most cultivated perennial plants, August is a decisive period..
If we talk about strawberries, they cannot do without feeding. At the same time, summer residents mistakenly believe that it is enough to mow the strawberries..
Our magazine’s expert, agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, told us what to feed strawberries with and why it is so important.
Why feed strawberries
Firstly, the berry bush must recover its strength after fruiting, as well as the development of the root system, growth of leaves, tendrils and new rosettes.
Secondly, fruit buds are laid for the next year.
Thirdly, strawberries at this time of year themselves need nutrition, just like in the spring.
How to feed strawberries in August
At this time of year, strawberries need nitrogen (for the berry bush to restore vegetation – it is added in the first half of the month), phosphorus and potassium.
A simple option is a complex fertilizer, in which these substances are in equal proportions.
In order for the plant to overwinter well, calcium will be required. It can be added at the end of August or even in the fall.
Boron, magnesium and sulfur may also be required.
