Experienced gardeners advise not to rush to harvest carrots..
When to harvest carrots
You can start harvesting after waiting for dry and clear weather at the end of September – when the temperature ‘overboard’ drops to +4. +6 degrees.
But you should not delay – late varieties should be harvested before regular frosts begin – no later than the end of September, otherwise subzero temperatures and prolonged rains will deprive you of a significant part of the harvest.
How to prepare carrots for storage
After you dig up the root vegetables, cut off the tops, stepping back 1 cm from the base and be sure to dry them thoroughly.
After this stage, sorting follows – only those fruits that are «blooming with health» and have no damage are allowed to be sent for storage. Send the rest for processing.
How to store carrots
The best place to store carrots is a basement with good ventilation and a temperature of around 0. +2 degrees.
Place the carrots in boxes filled with slightly damp sand (you can use high-moor peat) or in bags – no need to tie them.
Some people prefer to dip the root vegetables in a slurry made from water and clay, then dry them in the sun and place them in boxes.
