When to harvest beans: tips to help preserve the harvest

Beans are not as popular as cucumbers or potatoes, but you can»t do without them either, because they are the most popular legume crop.

They are unpretentious, healthy and popular in cooking. Therefore, you need to think about how to harvest the crop in order to preserve it.

Our magazine»s expert Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an agronomist and landscape designer, told us how to do the right thing.

Harvesting beans

Depending on the variety, cultivation method and climate, harvesting beans begins in July and ends in the fall.

1. It is better to plan the harvesting in the morning, so that fewer grains fall out of the cracked pods.

2. The harvesting is carried out by pulling out the plant with the roots, and not separately by the pod. After this, the bushes are left to dry in the shade and in the open air, laying suitable material under them.

3. In two weeks, the bean grains will reach the so-called technical maturity.

4. Then they need to be removed from the pods and dried for several days before finally putting them away for storage.

To avoid pests, keep the dried beans in an oven preheated to 60 degrees Celsius for 5 minutes.

Beans are stored at a temperature of 16-18 degrees.
